So much of what is written in nutrition today focuses on fat loss nutrition and diets but today I wanted to switch gears and talk about how you can use your diet to improve your health specifically your brain function. There are lots of supplements on the market that promise improved focus, energy, and brain output but these are all short term fixes that are chalk full of stimulants and B Vitamins (to be completely honest mega dosing regular B vitamins is NOT going to help your brain).

Today I’m not going to talk about the short term fix (even thought I do have what I call the ‘Mind Mastery Stack’ which is what I use on days that I have long and important test/exams). Instead, let’s look at three things that I do everyday to improve the function of my brain over the long term so hopefully as time goes on I can hold onto my ‘marbles’ and delay losing them

1. Eat blueberries – This probably comes to no surprise as the brain boosting benefits of blueberries essentially started the super food revolution. The antioxidants in these dark brain boosting nuggets have been shown time and time again to improve cognition and memory. Despite the well publicized and documented benefits of blueberries I still find that most people aren’t eating them on a regular basis (are you?). I’m talking about eating them everyday. You don’t need to eat organic or fresh ones either. Frozen blueberries are convenient, more cost effective, and just as nutritious. Start making a habit of eating 1 cup of blueberries everyday.

2. Fish Oil – If you read my blog on a daily basis you know that I LOVE fish oil. I don’t love the fishy taste – that’s not what I mean. I do love the drug like effects that they have. Research aside I have seen first hand with family and clients noticeable improvements in the memory of people taking 2-3g of EPA/DHA each day in as little as one month. That is truly amazing. There is also a fascinating body of research that is starting to build showing the beneficial effects of high dose fish oil in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Plus if you are pregnant and take fish oil you can boost your child’s I.Q. by a couple points as well (I know a couple points isn’t going to make your son/daughter the next Steve Jobs but every little bit helps right?)

3. Low Impact Carbs – Wanna know America’s #1 killer? Uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Seriously. Excess blood glucose is ‘toxic’ to your body. Controlling your blood sugar will also help you manage inflammation (inflammation is now being implicated as one of the major driving forces behind the aging process). Elevated blood sugar levels lead to increase glycation (basically this is when glucose molecules stick to things that they shouldn’t, like proteins or amino acids). This can lead to the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). AGEs have been not only implicated in the aging process but cancer, neurodegeneration (bad for brain function) and heart disease. Bad news huh? How can we avoid this? Controlling your blood sugar is as simple as controlling your carbs. To do this, I recommend that you focus on eating low impact carbs – broccoli, chick peas, spinach, peppers, black beans. When you prevent the blood sugar roller coaster from happening in you body each day you will provide your body and brain with a constant flow of energy throughout the day. This will fight the formation of AGEs and slow the inevitable neurodegeneration.

We all want to be smarter, think more clearly, and remember more stuff right? The three simple nutrition strategies that I have outlined above will directly impact on how your brain functions. As I mentioned in the beginning these are not quick fix blast your body with stimulant strategies. Eating blueberries, taking fish oil, and eating low impact carbs will help you improve your brain function over time (and hopefully slow the aging process as well). This is easy stuff to do – make it happen.

Junk food is not the be all and end all when it comes to taste. It is food that has been processed to the extreme and is now an American way of life. It is a common term used for any food item that is perceived to be unhealthy and has low or poor nutritional value.

Generally, a junk food is given a very attractive appearance by adding food additives and colors to enhance flavor, texture, appearance, and increasing long self life. Of course, it is also readily available at restaurant chains across the country in the form of French fries, chicken nuggets, shakes, soda, etc.

However there is an organization called “Parents Against Junk Food” which is a nonprofit organization with a simple mission: Stop the Sale of Junk Food in America’s Schools.

It is widely believed that junk food does not contain the essential fatty acids that the body requires to keep its largest organ, the skin, healthy. It is recommended that food supplements in the form of vitamins should be taken daily if the habit cannot be broken.

The body will also be lacking in proteins, fiber and other nutrients required for a healthy diet, and the consumption of products considered junk food has been associated with many health problems including obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and dental cavities.

Similarly, breakfast cereals are often regarded as healthy but may have high levels of sugar, salt and fat. The offspring of rats fed fatty, processed food had high levels of fat in their bloodstream and around major organs even after adolescence.

Nutritionists, doctors, and other health advocates often work to educate people about junk food, encouraging them to eat well balanced diets which contain a high proportion of healthy foods. These professionals almost unanimously hold the view that there are no good foods and bad foods, only good diets and bad diets.

The number of obese or overweight children in Britain aged between two and 15 has risen to about 30% in recent years. Changing your diet and taking exercise is a step in the right direction and as you replace fat with muscle, your clothes will become looser and your body firmer, but your weight may not change (muscle weighs more). In fact, the needle on the weight scale might not turn at all, but the heads of friends probably will. To lose weight, you’ve got to junk that junk food.

We all know that junk food is cheap and easy compared to quality raw materials (fresh veggies, organic meat, milk, fruit). For better or for worse (mostly worse), junk food is now available all over the world.

Apart for obesity, the other huge effect that bad eating habits bring on is skin rashes, eczema and psoriasis. It is reported that 25% of children under the age of five now suffer from eczema compared with less than 3% 50 years ago before junk food was so prevalent.

To combat these skin problems one of the latest discoveries is that the natural oil found in crocodile fat heals most forms of eczema in children within a few weeks. However is it not easy to get hold of and few pharmacies stock it.

The answer of course is to change your diet as junk food equals junk skin.

John Sweet has researched skin problems and discovered that many can be healed naturally with crocodile oil, visit http://www.crocodileoil.com for more information

There are plenty of good reasons to try a detox diet. Perhaps you are feeling a bit sluggish lately. How’s your digestion? Do you feel like you are constantly full of undigested food? Do you think you need to lose a little bit of weight? It’s pretty likely that you have taken in way too many preservatives and food additives, and you could probably use some “cleansing” of your system. If your body is feeling like there has been some abuse, you are ready for a good detox program.

Detox or detoxification refers to the process of eliminating toxins from your system. There are many different types of detox plans, from increased exercise to colonic irrigation to body scrubs to yoga and meditation, and on and on. Detox diets are one of the simplest ways to cleanse your body, though.

A good detox diet is one that minimizes the chemicals in your body, and helps you excrete them effectively. Foods that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants are increased, helping you get healthier faster. Your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, organic foods, and water will increase. Your ingestion of fats, caffeine, alcohol, yeast, and sugar will decrease.

If you typically enjoy fast foods, then you have definitely put some toxins into your body lately. The fats and fat-soluble chemicals that are contained in the French fries, cheeseburgers, and soft drinks can quickly overload your system, making you drag. Nutritional deficiencies, inefficient metabolism, fatigue, skin problems, straggly hair, headaches, and so many other problems will result.

When people go on a detox diet, they typically report that they have more energy, more bowel regularity, improved metabolism, less indigestion, and better concentration and focus on mental tasks. Detox diets typically mean better overall well being in every way.

Detox plans should be considered carefully; pregnant women or nursing mothers are generally discouraged from any kind of special diets that could alter their necessary nutrients for the baby. Those with anemia, eating disorders, heart disease, limited immunity, low blood pressure, ulcers, cancer, or other major health issues should consult a doctor and/or a nutritionist before beginning any detox diet.

When you begin a detox diet, you may initially experience some side effects, such as headache, diarrhea, or general weakness. These side effects are due to your body’s adjustment as you change the fuel you are providing. It is recommended that you begin a detox diet gradually, or even over a weekend when you may have more time to relax and avoid the rigors of daily life and work responsibilities. Be sure to drink plenty of water to help your body eliminate the toxins. You may need to avoid heavy physical activity for a few days.

Detox diets are not meant to be used as long term plans. Generally, it is recommended that you do a body detox program once or twice a year, ideally during the warmer months when your body has more energy overall.

Get ready to improve your health through a body detox diet. You’ll have more energy, more mental focus, and feel rejuvenated if you do.
